All searches are case-insensitive

Basic Search

Enter any combination of author, title, or other words in the search box and hit the "Search" button to perform the search. BibServ will return any bibliography entry which contains all of the words you have entered. You can also enter Boolean expressions, as described below. In the results page, simply click on any entry to get more details about it.

Advanced Search

If you go to the advanced search page, you will be presented with more advanced search options. Here, you may enter different search queries for the author, title, and full entry. For instance, to search for all papers by "Anderson" with "oranges" and/or "apples" in the title, you would type "Anderson" in the author field, "oranges apples" in the title field, and hit the search button.

Advanced search also allows you to choose in what format you wish to specify the search query. The options are as follows:

• Boolean
  This option allows you to enter full Boolean search queries. You may use any combination of AND,OR,NOT, and parenthesis to express your query. Only entries which exactly match your query will be returned. Here are some example queries you could enter, for instance, in the title field:
  

  Richardson AND Domingos AND NOT Mining	Would return any bibliography entry that was authored by Richardson and Domingos, but without the term 'Mining'
  Domingos AND NOT Richardson	Would return any bibliography entry that was authored by Domingos, but not Richardson

  Note, Boolean 'or' searches have been disabled temporarily until they are properly supported by the database.

  Also, you can simply use spaces to mean AND, and commands to mean OR. For instance, the query

  Richardon Domingos

  is equivalent to

  Richardson AND Domingos

• Similarity
  In this type of search BibServ will return any bibliography entry which contains at least one of the words you have entered, and will give a higher preference to entries which match multiple words.

• Substring
  With Substring search, BibServ will match only entries which contain your query, exactly as typed. That means that a substring search for "Compute" would match any entries containing "Computer", "Computed", "nothing computes", etc... Note that, in contast to the previous two search methods, Substring search has no notion of words. Hence, a substring search for "Intelligent Mining" will match only papers which have the term "Intelligent Mining" in them, but not any papers containing "Mining Intelligent".

Personal vs. Shared Bibliography

(registered users only) By selecting "Personal Bibliography", you can restrict your search to only search through entries contained in your personal bibliography. This can be useful if you know you have an entry for a given paper but cannot, for example, remember the key for the entry.

By selecting "Shared Bibliography", your seach will look through the entire database (over 400,000 bibliographic entries) for matches. The order in which those matches are returned depends on the set of trusts you have specified using the Manage Trusts menu item.
